Water Damage- How Far Is It Wet?

Water Damage or Carpet Cleaning? Call 866- 808-6707

After securing the premises one of the first thing a professional restoration expert wants to do is find out how far has the water traveled?  Starting at the source of the water damage the professional restorer must determine how far the water has migrated in every direction.   Next, he determines what types of materials have moisture from the water damage.   He would check sub flooring, type of carpet and underlay or padding, what type of wall construction, is there any insulation and if so what type.   All the affected materials are compared cost to restore verses replacement.    Can the materials be restored to their original condition and if not, they would be replaced?  Can the materials be restored for less than replacement?   Does the homeowner want to replace anyway?  Does the insurance cover 100% replacement?

Three factors will help in the decision.  1. Degree of contamination.   2.  Damage to the Item.   3.  Replacement cost versus restoration cost.   So, the restorer needs to identify the material, degree of contamination, damage to the item, and replacement cost versus restoration cost.  Some materials require more aggressive means to dry because they have slight reversible damage.   Drying in place means that the wet surfaces are dried with little or no manipulation.

To help in the drying process items that cannot be dried or decontaminated or if the item is of low value would be removed so the rest of the drying process would not be hindered.   Items in this category would include removal of surface or finish materials for example sheet goods, wallpaper, wallboard.   This is referred to as disruptive because the materials have to be removed.

The items that can be restored are inspected several times throughout the drying process by documenting how much moisture remains.   If the material is not drying more aggressive means may be in order such as removal.

The Importance of Fast Response in Water Damage Mitigation

There are many problems direct and indirect that is caused when water or moisture enters a building.   In any structure there are elements that support microbial growth.  The number one ingredient to initiate this growth and start a destructive sequence of microbial growth is the presence of too much moisture.  If too much moisture is present, this causes the microorganisms to rapidly multiply and the result is structural deterioration along with many other unwelcome problems like unpleasant odors, potentially serious health issues for the occupants.   When a water loss happens, the main factor to determine how much damage will result is the amount of time the structure has the excess amount of moisture.  Therefore, the most critical course of action is fast response to extract the excess water and start the drying process.  If you need fast response for a water damage restoration in your home or business call our emergency number

What to Do After Water Damage

Water Damage or Carpet Cleaning? Call 866- 808-6707

It is amazing how much damage water intrusion can do to walls, carpets, furnishings, flooring, and appliances.  A flood from busted water pipes, commode or sewer backup, leaking roofs, dishwasher malfunction, or washing machine overflow can do a lot of damage. Not only can it ruin your valuable possessions, but also your home or business may be out of commission for days, weeks or months. If you’re able to act quickly, you can minimize the damage and possibly save some of your possessions. Some of your success depends on how long the water’s been around, there might be pieces of furniture that can be saved, and sometimes, even carpet, but any electronics hit by water are probably doomed.

Do not wait to call a professional, do this immediately!   They have the equipment and tools to find the moisture and dry the structure to its original state.  Even if your basement only has one inch of water in it, or is even just damp, it is the perfect breeding ground for mold. Mold growth not only ruins walls, furniture, carpets, flooring, etc., it can lead to poor indoor air quality causing respiratory problems including asthma, and can lead to severe illness. It is vital that mold be prevented from ever starting and that is why you need to call a professional immediately.  Preventing mold growth is very important to keep your home’s air clean and healthy. So in addition to calling your insurance company, here are a few tips to deal with your flooded basement and minimize the water damage. (Call your insurance company before you do anything, and tell them what you want to do.)

To prevent electrical shock disconnect the power in all affected areas by unplugging and removing any electronics, furniture and movable items from the contaminated area immediately. The faster you get items out of water’s way, the more likely you’ll be able to save them from further contamination.  It may be necessary to disengage and remove flooded carpets or area rugs along with the underpadding. You may be able to save the carpet if you get it cleaned and disinfected.

Remove excess water as soon as possible. You may want to call a professional with a Truck Powered Water Extraction unit to remove as much of the flood water damage as possible. The following can help in light water damage from fresh water; however we recommend you call a professional if the water comes from sewer, or flood waters.  For fresh water use some old towels, buckets and mops to soak up as much water as possible.  A wet/dry vacuum can be used too, note: be very careful to plug it into outlets far away from water.

Sometimes the drywall can be saved depending on the category of water intrusion.  I may be necessary to cut out contaminated drywall if the water was a category 2 or 3.

Start drying the affected areas as soon as possible. Once you’ve removed as much water as possible, use special air movers and LGR dehumidifiers dry the contaminated areas. Drying your structure as fast as possible will help prevent microbial growth and mold. Removing the baseboards will help prevent mold and dry and salvageable Sheetrock much faster.  After the area has dried out, including flooring, wood beams, insulation, drywall, carpet etc., use a good microbial growth inhibitor to get rid of any bacteria
